- Between 1st July and 31st December 2016, total student visa applications lodged 165,678 -increased by 1.7 per cent when compared with the same period in the previous year. This was driven by an increase in lodgements of ELICOS Sector visas.

- The student visa lodgements from applicants in Australia increased by 4.6 percent to 56,284 in this six month period to 31 December 2016 compared to the same period in the previous year.
- Student visa (subclass 500) grants to applicants outside Australia increased in the six month period to 31 December 2016 by 6.0 per cent with increases to visa grants for the nationals of China, India, Brazil and Nepal.
- More Higher Education Sector visas were granted to applicants outside Australia (10.5 per cent) when compared to the same period in the previous year.

- As at 31 December 2016 there were 355,755 student visa holders in Australia. This is the highest recorded number of student visa holders in Australia in any year at 31 December.
- Visa applications lodged by applicants outside Australia increased in this six month period to 31 December 2016 by 0.3 per cent to 109,394 compared with the same period in the previous year.
- Over one third of students in Australia at 31 December 2016 were from China (19.9 per cent) or India (14.7 per cent).
- In the six months between 1st July and 31st December, visa applications for ELICOS courses lodged outside of Australia increased by 28.9%, 17,655 and Postgraduate Research Sector by 4.0 per cent to 3,326 compared to that the previous year

- There is no limit to the number of student visas the department of Immigration grants
- In the quarter from 1st October to 31st December 2016, the total student visa grant rate was 92.3%, up from 89.6% the previous year
- In that same quarter, the median of all student visa applications were granted within 14 calendar days
- In the six months between 1st July and 31st December 92,707 student visa holders were granted another substantive visa – 53% more than that in the same period the year prior
